What is the BasicsCard

You may decide, with the Commissioners, to have income management setup with a BasicsCard. A BasicsCard is one way your money can be managed. Your money will be put into an account and you will get a card with a PIN number.

How does it work?

Centrelink will put part of your fortnightly payments on the BasicsCard. You can use the card at approved stores and businesses. It is not a credit card or bank account. You can only spend the money Centrelink pays onto the card from the money in your managed account. The BasicsCard can be used to pay for important things like housing, food, education, medicine and clothing. It cannot be used to buy alcohol or tobacco, or be used for gambling.

Centrelink will talk to you about the different ways you can use your BasicsCard. For more information about the BasicsCard visit the Department of Human Services website at http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/centrelink/income-management/basicscard.
